Brief history of RC Lens

The history of RC Lens dates back to 1906, when the club was established by students in Lens. Its early colours were black and green, but the club changed to red and gold in 1923, creating the identity behind the Les Sang et Or name.

Lens made its first appearance in France’s top division in 1937 and became closely associated with the coal-mining community in the region. The club’s first Ligue 1 championship arrived in 1997/98, while the Coupe de la Ligue followed in 1999. More recently, Lens secured its first Coupe de France trophy by defeating Nice 3–1 in May 2026.
