History and development of S.L. Benfica

S.L. Benfica was founded on February 28, 1904, in Lisbon by 24 founding members, led by Cosme Damião. Over the decades, the club grew into Portugal’s most successful team, attaining 38 Primeira Liga titles, the most in Portugal, and capturing back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962. In the 1960s, led by Eusébio, Benfica reached three more European Cup finals and won 8 Primeira Liga titles in that decade alone. Today, under head coach José Mourinho, Benfica FC is a strong contender in the Primeira Liga, currently sitting in second place in the 2024/25 season.
