History of Borussia Dortmund

Foundation and early years

Borussia Dortmund FC was established on 19 December 1909 in Dortmund by 18 young men. The club started wearing blue-and-white shirts with a red sash, and in 1913 they began wearing black-and-yellow shirts. Its early years were largely played in local competitions, and in 1929 the club suffered from major financial difficulties when a plan to recruit professional players was rejected.

German football era

After the end of the Second World War, Dortmund became an important player in German football. The club won its first German championship in 1956 and defended it successfully in 1957; in 1963 the club won another German championship. Dortmund made a big breakthrough in Europe in the 1966 season, becoming the first German club to win a European club trophy, defeating Liverpool in the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

The golden era

Dortmund had another successful era in the 1990s, going on to win the Bundesliga in both 1995 and 1996 before securing the biggest European success of the 1990’s. Dortmund won its first UEFA Champions League in 1997 when it beat Juventus 3-1 and won the Intercontinental Cup against Cruzeiro. Under Jürgen Klopp, the club returned to domestic glory and conquered Bundesliga honors in 2011 and 2012, as well as the DFB-Pokal in 2012.

Modern Borussia Dortmund

It has been a competitive and modern era in the Bundesliga, European campaigns and focus on youth development. Dortmund’s biggest successes have been the victory in the DFB-Pokal in 2021, defeating RB Leipzig 4–1 in the final, and the UEFA Champions League final in 2024, where they were defeated 2–0 by Real Madrid. Dortmund also made the trip to the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, where they advanced to the quarter-finals before being beaten 3–2 by Real Madrid. This newfound identity has not abated the club’s reputation as a good place to find and nurture young talent, as Dortmund continues to do so.

Borussia Dortmund stadium

Borussia play their home matches at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Also known as Westfalenstadion, the stadium has a total capacity of 81,365 spectators, which makes it the largest football stadium in Germany. Famous for its atmosphere and the Sudtribune, better known as the Yellow Wall, the Borussia Dortmund stadium was opened on 2 April 1974 to host the 1974 FIFA World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund squad

Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund is one of the Bundesliga’s most successful clubs, having five Bundesliga titles. Their championship seasons were 1994/95, 1995/96, 2001/02, 2010/11 and 2011/12, with the 2011/12 team setting a club record of 81 points. The best period of Dortmund’s modern club history was under Jürgen Klopp, when they competed for the top two in two Championship wins in 2010/11 and 2011/12, before going head to head with Bayern Munich. The rivalry is one of the biggest in the Bundesliga and is a fixture that sees two sides regularly compete for the Bundesliga title, as well as some of the most important fixtures. Bayern are viewed as having one of their greatest rivals in the Bundesliga in Dortmund, who finished as one of the top contenders for the title last season in the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign.

Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League

Dortmund’s efforts in the Champions League have meant that the club’s biggest success in Europe has been the UEFA Champions League win in 1996/97 over Juve in Munich. The club also reached the final in 2012/13, losing 2–1 to Bayern Munich at Wembley, and returned to the final in 2023/24, where Real Madrid ran out victorious 2–0. Dortmund have also had some significant knockout campaigns, such as coming through to the quarter-finals in 2020/21 and 2024/25, losing the latter on the road to Barcelona 5–3 but winning the 2nd leg 3–1. They won the last game in 1997, which was not the same European Cup they had previously been playing in; the UEFA Champions League had replaced the European Cup.

Borussia Dortmund youth academy

The youth academy at Borussia Dortmund is dedicated to nurturing young talent to become professional footballers, as well as building character and decision-making skills. The club’s strategy focuses on talent recognition, talent development, and maximum flow between the academy team, the U23, and the pro team. Dortmund brings in young players from around the world, as well as nurturing talent within their own ranks, so that talented players have a chance to reach first-team football. The club’s youth development record is highlighted by the fact that they have regularly invited young players into first-team training, and during the 2026 training camp they had youngsters like Mussa Kaba, Mathis Albert and Samuele Inacio in the first team.

Borussia Dortmund transfers
